With more origin stories than one can imagine, Chhau dance is a native and martial art form of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. It is known to mankind since the 18th century. However, there is one mythological story that we all love to hear and share.
To save the humanity, Lord Brahma designed the 5th scripture beside the 4 already existing Vedas by taking specific attributes from them.
Rig Veda – Speech
Yajur Veda – Abhinaya (meaning, expressions)
Sama Veda – Music
Atharva Veda – Aesthetic Experiences
This dance form usually enacts stories from these epics. Usually meaning mask (Chhau), this one thing is common in all regions concerning this dance form. Chhau is about vitality and vigour. It depicts animals and birds alongside heroic dances using shield, bow, and sword.
Here, India Imprints salutes the Chhau dancers who never shy away from showing their dexterity on and off the stage.
