Kalamkari derived its name from 2 words – ‘kalam’ (pen) and ‘kari’ (work), meaning pen-work. This art form was initially started to depict Hindu mythology in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu villages. Eventually, weavers started using it in fabrics with natural dyes. Kalamkari work evolved mainly during the Mughal sultanate to paint their tents.

This 2000-year old craftwork faced a downfall when they were substituted by machine-made fabrics.
