It’s the story of a brother and a sister – Yamraj and Yami!
When the God of Death visited his sister, Yami (some calls her Yamuna) welcomed her brother with a tilak or vermilion on his forehead and aarti! She gave him his favourite sweets. It is then that Yamraj, happy with joy seeing his sister’s love, declared that on this day every brother who gets a tilak and aarti from his sister would live a long life. That’s why we call it the Yama Dwitiya.
But, the origin story of Bhai dooj is a little divided in Hindu mythology. That’s because some say we celebrate this festival to mark the return of Lord Krishna to his sister Subhadra after killing the demon Narakasur.
No matter the reason, India Imprints is always there to celebrate this beautiful bond of brothers and sisters that is known by other different names – Bhai Teeka, Bhai Phota, or Bhau Beej.
