The reason is deep-rooted in the Hindu mythology. Lord Shiva came to the rescue of gods and demons when poison came out while churning the oceans. This was in the month of Shravan.  

Shravan is the 5^th month according to the Hindu calendar and is considered auspicious by Indian women. Women do the month-long Shravan celebration by fasting and praying to Lord Shiva for their beloveds. Adorning beautiful clothes and having loads of fun are all part of the celebration. During this month, festivals are at its peak all over India. The festivities end with Raksha Bandhan.
